Unity is a positive alternative
Unity is a
positive alternative to traditional forms of Christian thinking and worship.
Our services are informal, contemporary, and very positive.
Unity teachings are based on
the teachings of Jesus, as found in the Gospels.
We believe Jesus taught a universal message of love with a deep trust,
based in his connection to his higher, inner Source.
Like Jesus, our goal is to deepen our connection
with this higher inner Source.
The Unity tradition is one of silent prayer and connection.
Our services at Unity
of Kanawha Valley include great music, a positive lesson,
and a time for quiet reflective prayer.
Rosemary Filmore Rhea,
granddaughter of Unity
co-founder Myrtle
Filmore, describes
Unity as:
... a healing
ministry. It looks
beyond the
theologies that
separate into the
love that inspires
all religions. And
because Unity has
no strict doctrine
or dogma to
protect, it
transcends the
walls we have
erected that keep
us from
experiencing our
oneness with God.
Unity's mission in
the world is to
help people
release those
fears and hurts
that bind and
confine us so that
we may experience
and express the
love that we are.

What are Unity's
basic teachings?
There are no creeds,
doctrines, or dogmas in Unity.
We recognize that
everyone is on his or
her own path of
spiritual discovery,
and we trust that a
loving God is guiding
each person's life
journey.
At the same time, we do have several statements that seem to sum up the
Unity approach for many. A favorite one is: "It's all good!"
We encourage people to explore and apply Unity
teachings based on their own spiritual understanding.
We believe that our
spiritual understanding is enhanced through reflective prayer and
meditation.
The five basic ideas that make up the Unity belief system
are:
-
God is good and everywhere present.
-
The spirit of God lives within each person,
therefore, all people are inherently good.
-
We create our life experiences through our way
of thinking.
-
There is power in affirmative prayer,
which we
believe increases our connection to God.
-
Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough,
we must live them.
Our Basic Affirmation, which we say out-loud and silently at the start
of each service:
We hold in
thought and in action the truth of this statement.
